The concept of one health – recognising the interdependence of human, animal and environmental health – has been brought into sharp focus in the COVID-19 pandemic.

The animal source of Covid-19 has yet to be confirmed, but the pandemic is believed to have originated in a “wet market” in Wuhan, China, where live animals, birds and fish were butchered and sold alongside dead ones. Since first emerging in January, coronavirus has spread rapidly across the globe – at the time of going to press, more than 3 million people have been infected, and of those, nearly 215,000 have died (World Health Organization, 2020).
