At the 5th International Dog Health Workshop (IDHW) 2024 in Helsinki, Finland, Peter Sandøe from the University of Copenhagen, Denmark, gave a presentation under the headline 'Will dog breeds as we know them today soon be a thing of the past?'

Together with his co-authors Helle F. Proschowsky, Maja Arendt, Brenda Bonnett, Camilla S. Bruun, Irena Czycholl, Merete Fredholm, Dan O'Neil, and Jamen Serpell, Peter Sandøe argued that the way forward is to breed better in terms of physical health, behavioral well-being, and good fit with owner expectations.

The aim of the presentation was to describe the current trends in the demand and supply of dogs in the Global North and to discuss the large changes that are taking place.
